Diverticular Disease

What is diverticular disease?

Diverticula are pockets that develop in the wall of the colon. The term diverticulosis refers to the presence of the pockets. Diverticulitis occurs when these pockets become inflamed. Diverticular disease can cause abdominal pain, fever or bleeding from the colon.

What is the treatment for Diverticular Disease?

Most mild cases of diverticular disease are treated with diet changes and oral antibiotics. More severe cases require IV antibiotics, or if there is no response to medicines, surgery is required.
